Fatheranddaughtersharedasimilarpersonality.In1938duringtheSecondSino-JapaneseWarToyoichiservedasConsulGeneralinChina,andheworkedonpeacenegotiationsbehindthescenes.WhenheandtheMinisterforForeignAffairsdifferedintheirviewsonChiangKai-shek,whowasChina’sleaderatthetime,Toyoichiwouldunflinchinglyexpresshisopinions,eventohissuperiors.Hewasamanwholivedhisbeliefs,anditcanbesaidthatsheinheritedthistrait.Herfather’sencouragementurgedhisdaughterontowardstheUNGeneralAssembly.Herfatherhadasignificantimpactonhercareerevenasanadult.AttheendofJuly1968shereceivedasuddenvisitfromthewell-knownwomen’sactivistFusaeIchikawa,whoaskedhertoparticipateintheUNGeneralAssemblyinNewYorkforthreemonths,beginningfromSeptember.Atfirstshethoughtitwouldbeimpossibleowingtothefactthatshehadjustgivenbirthtohersecondchild,anopinionthatwasechoedbyhermotherTsuneko,andsoshewasn’tsureastowhethersheshouldparticipateornot.However,Toyoichi’sadvicewasthattheycouldfigurethingsoutifeveryoneworkedtogetherandfoundwaysandpeopletohelpaftermakingadecision,andsoshedecidedtogo.Atatimewhenhouseworkandchildcarewerewomen’swork,itcouldnothavebeeneasytodecideontakingabreakandfocusingonworkingforone’sowncareer.IaminaweofherdeterminationtogotheUN,butIalsofeltthesupportofthepeoplearoundher.Theremusthavebeenmanyconflictsassheswitchedbackandforthbetweenhercareerandhercourseinlifeasawoman,butIfeelthatherbeliefinpossibilitiesandthewordsofencouragementshereceived,servedasherdrivingforce.LecturehostedbytheFacultyofForeignStudies"BettingonPeace:10YearsofRefugeeProtection"TheauditoriuminBuildingNo.10,wherethelecturewasheld,waspackedwithstudentsandfacultymembers.(April26,2001)VisitingSophiaUniversityasHeadofUNHCR4(2)RoleModel2:MotherBritt—InspiringWordsforaStudentMotherBrittwasalsoarolemodel.BorninAlbany,NewYork,asElizabethBritt,shewassenttoJapanin1937astheheadofthelanguageprogramoftheSchooloftheSacredHeart.ShewasforcedtoleaveJapanduetothePacificWar,butlaterreturnedin1946atherownrequest,becomingthefirstpresidentoftheUniversityoftheSacredHeartinTokyoin1948.AsJapanrebuiltafterthewarshelaidthefoundationsoftheuniversityinabriefperiodoftime,acquiringland,constructingnewschoolbuildingsandaconvent,andestablishingagraduateschoolandnewdepartments.Sheassertedthesignificanceandmeaningofafour-yearuniversitywherewomencouldstudy,conveyinghowwomencouldlive“anewwayoflife.”MotherBrittoftenspokeaboutorderanddiscipline,andshewouldpassionatelydeclarewhatwomenshouldstrivetobe,usingthefollowingwords.Girls,beindependent,beintelligent,becooperative.Nomatterwhereyouare,youmustbetorchbearersoflove.(SeishinStories)Hashino
