1TheOfficeforthePromotionofDiversityisengagedinproactiveinitiativestowardsthecreationofaninclusivesociety,andasocietydevoidofdiscrimination.TheSophiaSchoolCorporationhasbeenpromptinadvancingsuchinitiatives.Ourinitiativesforwomenempowermentinparticularhavealreadybeencommended,andourRoleModelSerieshasearlierfeaturedfemininerolemodels.RecentlyhoweverwehavebeencollaboratingintheScience&TechnologyPromotionalAdjustmentFundsMEXT“InitiativefortheImplementationoftheDiversityResearchEnvironment(SurveyandAnalysis).”anditsfocusisonwomenleadership.Hence,wedecidedtotakeupthesamethemeinourRoleModelSeries.ViaitsengagementineducationandresearchtheSophiaSchoolCorporationstrivestowardequity,byacceptingdiversityandembracingalllearners.Thismeanstoconcurrentlycarryouteducationandresearchthatstrivetowardequity,andcreateacampusandsocietythatrecognizethecontributionsofall.EducationfordiversityisconcernedwithrecognizingthedistinctionsamongindividualsbothwithinandbeyondtheUniversity,whiletheteachingofinclusionsignifiestheacceptanceofthosedifferences.Theseinitiativesmusttranscenddifferencesinourmodesofthinking,learning,behavior,andsoon,andadaptifnecessarytothesituationsoastodealwithallinanoutlookofequityandjustice.Theseareconceptsthatcomplementeachother,andengagingwiththemenhancesconcurrentlythelearningopportunitiesofallstudents,andworkingopportunitiesofallmembersoftheteachingstaff.Oureducationalspiritof“ForOthers,WithOthers,”isalsoameansof“EducationforEquity.”Aspiritofdiversityandtheproactivepracticeofinclusion,areindispensabletowardsthepursuitofequity.Withreferencetoeducation,universitiesaregrowingmoreandmorediverse,andintermsofdemographics,thistrendappearscertaintocontinue.Diversityandinclusionimproveeducationandlearning.ItismyhopethatreaderswillbeabletogothroughthisissueoftheRoleModelSeriesbybecomingawareofgenderdiversity,realizingthesituationofwomeninJapanesesociety,andconfirmingourhighhopesandexpectationsregardingSophiaUniversity’sfemaleresearchers.Iwishtoextendmysinceregratitudetoallofourauthorsandeditorsofthisissue.Sali AUGUSTINEChair of the Committee for the Promotion of Diversity and Trustee for General AffairsofSophiaSchoolCorporationDiversity and Inclusion: Concepts for Equity
