avote,cangetthingsdecidedquickly.Neverthelesshowever,duringourworkinggroupdiscussions,Imadesuretolistenasmuchaspossibletovariouspeople’sviewsandperspectives,evenifittooktime,andworkedtowardssomewayoffindingapointofcompromise,whilemakingmutualconcessions.Hence,oncompletingourworkontherevisions,Iwasrelievedtohearfromthesecretariatthathadhelpedwiththeworkthattheyvaluedmydemocraticapproachinconductingthediscussions,andIwasgladIhadacquiredthecouragetoundertaketheLeadposition.Atthesametime,Iwasdeeplygratefulforthecollaborationandconsiderationofallmycolleagues.Inmycase,lookingbackonthetimeswhenIwasengagedintheseprojects,Irealizethattherehadalwaysbeensomeone(includingfamilymembers)atmyside,supportingandencouragingmeasImadeittothefinishline.AttimeswhentheworkisprogressingslowlyornegotiationswithotherpartiesarenotmovingsmoothlyItendinstantlytopanic,butonseeingtheco-workersatmysidesilentlyproceedingwiththeirwork,Ifindmyselfimbuedwitha“gratuitousconfidence”that“itwouldallbeokay.”Inthefallof2019,SophiaUniversitywelcomedagroupofparticipantstoateacherstrainingseminarrunbytheAsia-EuropeFoundation(ASEF),anorganizationconstitutedofthe51membernationsandregionsoftheEUandASEAN.Thanksoncemoretothecollaborationofallmyfellowteachersandstaff,oureffortsdevelopedfrompreliminarynegotiationsandlogisticalconsultationswiththeMinistryofForeignAffairsandtheMinistryofEducation,Culture,Sports,ScienceandTechnology,andculminatedinatrulyenjoyableinternationalexchange.Today,IamstillincontactwitheveryonefromASEF.Ithinkthisistrueofeveryjob,butIsincerelyfeelitwonderfultoworkascolleaguesoraspartofateam,withawiderangeofpeople.Unlikegettingthingsdonebyoneself,consultingothersandmakingadjustmentscansometimestaketimeandfeelburdensome.Yettheprocessofpursuingavarietyofpossibilitieswithpeoplecontributingtheirdiverseopinionsandideas,hasthepotentialforunexpectedandwonderfulencounters.Ithinkitiseasytoenvisageleadershipasbeingliterallyaboutleadingthewayfromthefrontlines,butIthinkthereisalsoanotherkindofleadership.Hereyoucanbepartofagroupofpeople,reconcilediverseopinionsandthoughts,andfindadirectiontomoveonalongwithyourcolleagues.Avarietyofencountersshapeandconnectthethoughtsofeachandeveryoneofus,andthisiswhereIfindthesignificanceandjoyofcreatingknowledgeplatforms.At the Meeting with Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), United Nations University Nov. 2019.26With Support and Encouragement AMessagefortheNextGeneration
