Itisnowover20yearssinceIcommencedworkingatSophiaUniversity.Duringthatperiod,inmyVicePresidentialrolesIwasdirectlyinvolvedintheuniversity’sacademicexchangeandglobalacademicaffairsoveraseven-yearperiod,inadditiontoparticipatinginavarietyofactivitiesoutsidetheuniversity.Boththesesetsofopportunitieshavebeenextremelyvaluable,andthatisbecausemyspecialtyisinComparativeEducationandInternationalEducation,whichdealwithinternationalexchangeandthemovementofpeople,andfocusonhowinternationalexchangeandacademicculturalexchangecreateknowledgenetworks.Thisiscloselylinkedtomyresponsibilitiesinworkingtowardsexchangeandcooperationwithoverseasuniversitiesandinternationalinstitutions.WhileSophiaUniversityhasauniquenetworkbasedonitsmissionasaJesuithighereducationinstitution,todayitengagesinavarietyofacademicexchangeactivities,eachofwhichreflectsthehistorytheuniversityhascreatedforitselfandthepeoplewhohavebeeninvolvedalongthispath.Thereismuchtolearnindialogueandnegotiationsthatcrossbordersandthediversityofcultures,butthemostenjoyablepartofmyworkininternationalexchangewasmeetingawiderangeofpeople.InmyworkoutsidetheuniversityfortheJapaneseNationalCommissionfortheUNESCO,whichIcarriedoutforoversixyearsfrom2016toNovember2022,Ihadoccasionstodiscusstheprogressof“EducationforSustainableDevelopment”astheChairpersonoftheEducationSubcommittee,andparticipateattheUNESCOHeadquartersinrevisingthe“RecommendationconcerningEducationforInternationalUnderstanding,CooperationandPeaceandEducationrelatingtoHumanRightsandFundamentalFreedoms,”originallydraftedover50yearsago.Since2020,IhavealsobeenViceChairofProSPER.Net(PromotionofSustainabilityinPostgraduateEducationandResearch),anetworkforwhichtheUnitedNationsUniversityservesasthesecretariat.Inallopportunities,Ihavestronglyfeltthatnetworksofpeoplelinkedbytrustandfriendshipareindispensable.Ithinkthemostimportantandchallengingthingaboutworkingonaprojectisthefactthatwehavetoconstantlycollaborateandshareinformationanddifferentapproacheswithourcolleagues,andeventuallypushthingsforwardasateam.ThiscanbedifficultamongJapanesecolleagues,andevenmoresowithcolleaguesspeakingdiverselanguagesorhavingdifferentcustoms.WhenIgotthechancetoserveastheLeadforaworkinggroupontherevisionoftheUNESCO’sRecommendationin2022,Ifacedthechallengingtaskofschedulingmeetingswithtimedifferencesinmind,andputtingtogetheropinionsandcommentsofthegroup’smembers,allfromdiversecountriesandwithdifferingculturalsettings,duringalimitedtimeframe.Itisquitepossiblethatpresentingproposalsunilaterallyandtaking25FromMiki SUGIMURAProfessorintheDepartmentofEducationoftheFacultyofHumanSciencesofSophiaUniversity.ShereceivedherPh.D.ineducationfromtheUniversityofTokyo,andherareasofexpertiseareComparativeEducationandInternationalEducation.ShewasVicePresidentforAcademicExchangefromApril2014toMarch2017,andVicePresidentforGlobalAcademicAffairsfromApril2017toMarch2021.DiscoveriesfromMyPositionswithinandoutsidetheUniversityTheChallengesandRewardsofBeingaLeaderBuilding Knowledge Platforms with Our Associates
