Iholdseveralpostsinacademicsocietiesandnon-profitorganizations,buttakingonthepositionofoutsidedirectoratTohan(whereIworkedearlier)in2021,andassumingtheroleofmanagingdirectorforthecertifiedNPOHonnogakkoin2022,weresignificanteventsforme.Intheformerpost,Iamnotdirectlyinvolvedincompanymanagementasanon-executivedirector,butIaminapositiontoevaluatethedirectionthecompanyistaking,usingskillstocriticallyengagewithissuesIcarriedoverasImovedintomyresearchcareer,andIthinkthisiscrucial.NotonlyamITohan’sfirstfemaledirector,Iwasalsothecompany’sfirstfemalemanagerwhenIworkedthere,soIammakingaconsciousefforttoclearlycommunicateonpointsofconcernwithcompanystructuring.Attheendoflastyear,Irecordedavideomessagetobeshownwithinthecompany,andspokeveryfranklyaboutvariousissues.Mypositionasdirectorallowsmetorelayeducationandresearchtothebusinessworld,andIappreciatethisopportunity.TheNPOHonnogakkowasstartedin1995inthecityofYonagoinTottoriPrefecture,anditprovidesspacetoholdbook-relatedseminarsandotherevents,allowingpeoplefromvariouswalksoflifetocometogetherandgetinvolvedwithandgainhands-onexperienceofbooksandreading.HonnogakkobeganwithinthemovementtoestablishlibrariesthathadbeengrowingsteadilyinTottoriPrefecture,sincethe1970s.Thiswasduetoeffortsoftheheadofalong-establishedlocalbookstorechain(conductedalongwithhisworkofmanagingthestore)topromotethe“buildingofknowledgecommunities”andthepublishingindustry.Thefounderisapersonoftrulyhighideals,whogenuinelyputphilanthropyintoactualpractice.Retracinghispathinmyresearchwhileparticipatingintheorganization’sactivitiesremindedmeastohowimportantthisis,andinspiredmyresolutiontotakeontheroleofmanagingdirector.Havingsaidthat,theactivitiesofthissmallNPO,carriedoutfromourtwobasesinYonagoandTokyo,dependalmostentirelyonvolunteers,amongthoseworkinginpublishingcompanies,bookstores,libraries,andlocalresidents.Icannotpossiblycompetewithmyillustriouspredecessors.IalsothinkIwouldlikemyroleheretobelessabouttakingcommandandmoreaboutfocusingmyeffortsonthekindofspaceourvolunteersneedtobeabletoeasilycarryouttheiractivities,oncreatinganopenatmosphere,andonsoundmanagementoftheorganizationasanNPO.Thisisanewchallengeforme,anditalsomeansalottocarryoutactivitieswhilebasedinanareaoutsideTokyo.23ProfessorintheFacultyofHumanitiesofSophiaUniversity.ManagingDirectorofcertifiedNPOHonnogakko(“BookSchool”),andNon-ExecutiveDirectorforTOHANCORPORATION.ShereceivedherM.A.fromtheGraduateSchoolofInterdisciplinaryInformationStudiesoftheUniversityofTokyo.Shespecializesinmodernandcurrentmediahistoryandmediatheory,botharoundpublishing.Sinceacademicyear2022,shehasalsoservedasHeadoftheArtofThinkingandExpressionDivisionoftheCenterforLiberalEducationandLearning.UtilizingMyExperienceofNon-GovernmentalandNPOPostsHeldoutsidetheUniversityFromKyoko SHIBANOLikeClearingAwayDriftsofFallenLeaves,andwithScrupulousHonesty
