IhadbeenashypersoneversinceIwasachild.AtuniversityIdidnotgetactivelyinvolvedinanything,alwayskeepingalowprofilebothduringclassesandclubactivities.DespitethisthefactthatIwouldsomehowendupinapositionofleadership,issomethingmyuniversityfriends,myfamily,andmostofallmyselfwouldneverhaveimagined.Havinghadthisexperience,whatIwouldliketocommunicatetotheyoungergenerationsismypersonalawarenessofthefactthatpeoplecangrowandchange.1.PeopleChange,andPeopleGrowthroughTheirWorkDespitehavingtendedtowarddiffidenceinmyuniversitydaysInowgetexcitedduringworkdiscussions,andalthoughearliermymindwouldgoblankifIwasmerelycalleduponintheclassroom,Inowspeakbeforeaudiencesofseveralhundredpeople.Ihavegainedtheabilitytodotheseandmanyotherthingsthroughmywork.InsituationswhereIsimplyhadtogetonwithit,Istrovetodomyutmost,fromfranticallystudyingbooks,magazines,newspapers,andothermaterialtocompensateformylackofexperience,torepeatedlypracticingpresentationsonmyowndozensoftimes.Ialsoattendedgraduateschoolalongsidemywork.Purelyowingtomymakingthesestrenuousefforts,Iincreasedmycapabilitiesandopenedupnewlevelsofpotentialdevelopment.Ihaveacquiredavarietyofexperiences,sometimeswithachallengesinceIfullyrealizedIwasoverstretchingmyselfalittle,butIdidnotgiveupatthefirsthurdlebutwentontobuild.2. Chance Encounters Hold OpportunitiesMy long career was by no means a constant succession of wishes being granted. At the same time however, the environment I found myself in and duties I happened to be given presented me with a great deal of stimuli which enabled me to develop, and insights that revealed to me the way ahead. I have the impression that “serendipity,” a phenomenon we hear about so often, is not something that just occurs to you if you wait for it. Rather, it is something you will suddenly become aware of when you fully immerse yourself in the task at hand. However, if you don’t lay the groundwork that will set you up to notice these precious opportunities, they will slip past you in the blink of an eye.
