SincemytimeasastudentatSophiaUniversity,theenergeticperformanceofsociologistProfessorKazukoTsurumionthepodium,hasleftaprofoundimpressionuponme.AsshespokeofherfieldworkfollowinginthefootstepsofscientistandethnologistKumagusuMinakata,herinterestandrespectforhimseemedtoradiatefromeverywordsheuttered.ThisexperiencealsorevealedthegenerosityofSophiaUniversityasanorganization,insustainingtheresearchsideofhercareer.Ithinktheseprinciplesofindependenceandself-respect,ofpursuingwhateverresearchwelike,whereverwelike,andaccordingtoourowninterests,remainsaliveandwellamongthefemaleteachingstaffofSophiatoday.Anattitudethatcombinesadislikeforconstraintsaswellasconformityandrespectformutualfreedom,issharednotonlybyourteachingstaffbutbythefemaleadministrativestaffandstudentsaswell.Ithinkthiscultureconstitutesthebasisofthecourageandquicknessonourfeet,thatenablesustopromptlysetoutonourowntodestinationsallovertheworld,andundertakevolunteerwork,surveys,andresearch.Thosewhomakeupouruniversity,andIdon’tmeanjustthewomenofSophia,generallyhavelittleinterestin“stickingwiththeherd”withinalimitedspace.Ithinksuchamentalityprovidestheorganizationwithanambienceofopenness.Itchecksthefruitlessfussandfrictionthatariseinsmallandconfinedgroups,andcreatesamoodofliberalitythatisabletoacceptdiversity.Neverthelessthough,theremayalsobeanothersidetothisissue.Thisorientationmayresultinatendencytowithdrawalittlefromissuessuchasobjectivelyrecognizingone’sindividualpositionwithintheuniversitycommunity,consideringandputtingintoactionwhateachofuscandofortheuniversity,andwhennecessary,demonstratingleadership.However,ifwomen,despitehavingrelativelyfewerchancesthanmentoassumeleadershippositionswithinorganizationstaketheinitiativetoworktogetherandpursueoriginal,diverse,andactiveframeworksforoureducationandresearchorganizations,SophiaUniversitymaybegiftedwithanewstrengthandappeal.Asidefromcreatingasafeandsecurecampusforeveryone,supportingtheextracurricularactivitiesofstudents,andprovidingcomprehensivefinancialandhealth-relatedsupport,themissionoftheVicePresidentforStudentandGeneralAffairsalsoincludestheconsiderationofenvironmentalissues,strengtheningofanti-harassmentsystems,andothermatters.However,therearetimeswhenitseemsveryhardtomobilizeandcommunicatewithstudents,withregardtoactivitiesplannedtowardsachievingthesegoals.Suchhurdlesarisebecausestudentsaregenerallyverybusyandtheyallhavedifferingdailyrhythms,andsotherearenolongeranyfixeddaysortimeswhenarelativelyhighnumberofstudentsarelikelytoparticipateinanevent.Theexcessiveinformationtheytakeinonlineonadailybasisandthespeedatwhichthecommunicationstoolstheyusearechanging,arealsobecomingsignificantfactorsregardingthedifficultyofgettinginformationtostudents.19VicePresidentforStudentandGeneralAffairs,ofSophiaUniversityandaProfessorintheFacultyofHumanities.ShereceivedherPh.D.fromtheUniversityofAngersinFranceandherfieldofresearchis20thcenturyFrenchliterature,withaparticularfocusonsurrealismandtheperiodinwhichthismovementoccurred.Women’sEmpowermentatSophiaTheChallengingandRewardingAspectsofBeingaLeaderFromAtsuko NAGAIWorkingtoPassMyAlmaMateron to Future Generations
